Future Learning: What’s Wrong With School?
Parts of the video that stood out for me:
The video mentioned how our current educational institution acts to suppress natural instincts. The main behaviours that are being taught right now are silence and submissiveness. Moreover, the educational problems that students are asked to solve are separate from the relevance of our students’ daily lives.
What strikes me about this video is that this problem is not something new. John Dewey, in fact, made similar observations over a century ago. Is our education really changing for the better?
2. Collaboration: On the Edge of a New Paradigm
I like how in the documentary they mention that new learning comes from a friction between constraint and play. Play, being the medium that allows people to engage in their passion and make the “constraint” relevant to their lives. In Chapter 2, Openness : the documentary highlights the importance of sharing information (research specifically) to the public because it’s more accurate than the internet. They also talked about how it took a group of amateurs + gaming, 3 weeks to solve the virus structure of HIV versus scientists who took 15 years and could not solve it. It spoke to the power of collaboration and complimenting strengths, we need to allow a wide range of people to contribute to a problem and it can increase the likelihood of success !
