Why is art education important to human development?
Healthy human development: constitutes finding our sense our self, figuring out our unique role in society and developing confidence.
From our own observations of children, we could see that, in general, they not bogged down by social rules and they are not afraid to be themselves. Children are more imaginative, emotionally independent, playful and curious. Yet, somehow, as we grow older, this sense of creativity disappears and our uniqueness becomes oppressed by social norms.
The Frier reading quite accurately explains how the educational institution plays a salient role in undermining a child’s sense of self. Teachers often treat students as if they are empty vessels, which need to be filled. They narrate facts and expect their students to mechanically memorize their teachings without engaging in critical thinking or challenging the course content. The common form or education is known as banking education and it needs to change. Frier subjects that teachers take the problem-posing method of teaching, where students are encouraged to engage in critical thinking, challenge the status quo, question and be creative.
Banking Teaching v.s Problem Probing Teaching
For this Challenge every group was asked to think of one work to describe Banking education and one word to describe problem probing education.
Our group’s description was being the guide on the side v.s. the sage on the stage.
